REMEDIES Open Day in Marina Izola: innovative solutions to prevent marine litter in Slovenia

On 18 March 2026, Infordata participated in the REMEDIES Open Day held at Marina Izola, Slovenia, an event dedicated to marine litter prevention, plastic pollution monitoring and the launch of the REMEDIES Anti-Litter Campaign in Slovenia.

The event was organised by the University of Maribor (UM) with the support of project partners including You(r)Sea Institute, ZRS Koper, Marina Izola, CLERA, Infordata and NIC. It brought together representatives from research organisations, local authorities, industry, NGOs and civil society to discuss practical and innovative solutions for reducing marine pollution and improving coastal environmental management.

A day focused on marine litter prevention and environmental innovation

The Open Day offered participants a valuable overview of the REMEDIES project and its approach to tackling marine plastic pollution through a combination of scientific research, digital innovation and stakeholder engagement.

During the event, participants explored how marine litter is identified, monitored and analysed using evidence-based methodologies and local pilot actions. The activities also highlighted the importance of cooperation between public institutions, researchers, technology providers and local communities in addressing environmental challenges effectively.

Pilot activities at the Koper demo site

A key part of the programme focused on the pilot activities developed at the Koper demo site, showing how the REMEDIES project is testing practical tools and methods to reduce marine litter and improve environmental monitoring in real coastal contexts.

This session helped demonstrate how European cooperation projects can generate concrete local impact by supporting innovation and knowledge transfer in areas affected by plastic pollution and marine waste.

Live demonstration of REMEDIES technologies

One of the most engaging moments of the Open Day was the live demonstration of innovative REMEDIES technologies at Marina Izola.

Participants had the opportunity to observe:

  • an underwater drone for marine litter monitoring, used to inspect the seabed and identify large plastic waste;
  • a microplastic filtration system for wastewater, designed to reduce the release of microplastics generated during boat maintenance activities.

These demonstrations showed how environmental technologies can support more effective marine litter monitoring, plastic waste detection and pollution prevention in coastal and marina environments.

For Infordata, participating in this event was an important opportunity to contribute to the promotion of innovative digital and technological solutions for environmental protection and sustainable coastal management.

The PLASTIC FANTASTIC Seminar – Slovenia Edition

The event also included the PLASTIC FANTASTIC Seminar – Slovenia Edition, hosted by the University of Maribor, which encouraged dialogue among citizens, experts, decision-makers and local stakeholders.

The seminar created a useful space to exchange knowledge, experiences and good practices related to marine pollution prevention, while reinforcing the importance of public awareness and community involvement in protecting marine ecosystems.

Cooperation for cleaner seas and more sustainable coasts

The REMEDIES Open Day successfully engaged a broad audience, including local authorities, marina operators, researchers, NGOs and citizens, confirming the value of cross-sector collaboration in tackling marine litter and microplastic pollution.

For Infordata, events like this are essential to strengthen cooperation, support innovation and contribute to the development of more effective and scalable solutions for cleaner seas, healthier marine ecosystems and more sustainable coastal areas.

The REMEDIES Open Day in Marina Izola once again showed how science, technology and stakeholder engagement can work together to address one of today’s most urgent environmental challenges.
