Karst Firewall 5.0: a meeting in Aurisina focused on wildfire prevention, digital tools and stakeholder engagement

On 17 March, the Casa della Pietra “Igo Gruden” in Aurisina hosted an engaging and highly valuable meeting held within the framework of the Karst Firewall 5.0 project, focusing on wildfire prevention and management in karst areas.

The meeting opened with a welcome session and project introduction by Dr. Massimiliano Granceri Bradaschia (IUAV), who presented the overall framework of the project, outlining its objectives, methodology and future perspectives. This introductory session provided useful context for the ongoing activities and highlighted the importance of cooperation between research, technological innovation and local stakeholders.

One of the key moments of the afternoon was the operational discussion on critical areas and priority actions, which encouraged a practical and constructive exchange of observations, needs and experiences among participants. The workshop offered an important opportunity for dialogue between project partners and several stakeholders from the sector, including representatives of the fire brigade, civil protection services and other organisations involved in wildfire prevention and risk management.

A particularly relevant part of the meeting was the presentation of the integrated wildfire management platform and its predictive algorithms, delivered by Marko Petelin, Samuel Zidaric and Nicola Zuccato from Infordata Sistemi Srl. This session highlighted the potential of digital technologies to support monitoring, risk analysis and intervention planning, offering innovative tools to improve operational activities in the field.

The meeting also included a structured validation of the digital tools developed within the project, allowing participants to provide useful feedback and practical suggestions for future improvements. The final plenary discussion further confirmed the strong interest in the topics addressed and the importance of continuing along a shared path based on innovation, operational effectiveness and institutional cooperation.

Overall, the meeting proved to be highly interesting and productive, not only as an opportunity to review the current progress of the project, but also to strengthen dialogue with key territorial actors and help guide the next phases of Karst Firewall 5.0.
